Ceramic and 3D design: Bronze Ding
This project is a study of ancient Chinese bronze ware, inspired by my cultural heritage and personal connection to traditional motifs. Drawing from the form of the Ding, a vessel originating in the Shang dynasty (c. 1600 BC–c. 1046 BC) initially used for cooking and later for religious and ritual purposes, I explored its historical significance and intricate design.
The piece incorporates the Beast Face Pattern, a prominent decorative motif of the Shang dynasty known for its abstract and mysterious representation of animal faces. My studio art skills played a vital role in precisely carving this pattern into the clay slab, emphasizing its cultural authenticity. To enhance the bronze-like texture of the piece, I utilized a metal coating technique rather than traditional glazing, further expanding my understanding of ceramic surface treatments and 3D design.
